The Quinsigamond Children's School offers to young children (2 years 9 months to 5 years of age) a program that fosters appreciation of self, others, and the world around them. It promotes self-motivated learning through discovery and hands-on involvement with the environment. Emphasis is placed on meeting individual needs while encouraging respect for others. Each child progresses at his/her own pace through individual, small group and large group activities. Experiences are designed to help children develop basic skills, to encourage a working understanding of concepts, and to simulate greater facility in language use and communication. Children are challenged to solve simple problems and to practice developing skills in an environment filled with manipulative, creative, and dramatic sensory materials. Behavioral limits are set to provide children with a sense of security; actions are redirected, feelings are discussed, and self-respect is preserved. The Children's School combines exploration and discovery opportunities for making choices and an atmosphere of order, predictability, warmth, and mutual trust. Most importantly, children gain feelings of confidence and competence through their interactions with people and materials.

Childcare Agency of the Month Questions
Introduction:

Early Childhood Central's Child Care Agency of the Month for October is Quinsigamond Children's Center.  We spoke with Nancy Knight to learn more about this child care agency that is located at Quinsigamond Community College.

What do you want the children in your care to gain while in your program?:

The program promotes self-motivated learning through discovery and hands-on involvement with the environment. Emphasis is placed on meeting individual needs while encouraging respect for others.

What sets your Agency apart from the other area Agencies?:

Our school is very unique because we are a demonstration school for students and the community. We provide the best practices for early childhood education. We are located on the campus of Quinsigamond Community College.

Do you have the resources to accept special needs children?:

We have the resources to accept most special needs children.

What is your Agency’s educational philosophy?:

We believe that children progress at his/her own pace through individual, small group and large group activities. Experiences are designed to help children develop basic skills, to encourage a working understanding of concepts and to simulate greater facility in language use and communication. Children are challenged to solve simple problems and to practice developing skills in an environment filled with manipulative, creative, and dramatic sensory materials. Behavior limits are set to provide children with a sense of security; actions are redirected; feelings are discussed, and self-respect is preserved.

The Children’s School combines exploration and discovery, opportunities for making choices and an atmosphere of order, predictability, warmth and mutual trust. Most importantly, children gain feelings of self confidence and competence through their interaction with people and materials.

Have you had an “aha” moment with a child and/or a surprising result from the use of a classroom activity?:

Children, educators and families often have “aha” moments. We believe children learn by playing, exploring and discovering with hands on activities.

Is there anything else about your Agency that you would like to be mentioned?:

The Children’s School is supported by Quinsigamond Community College since it is a model training program for the students in Early Childhood Education. The center houses the faculty offices and classrooms for the college students.
